Our product designers are passionate about creating delightful experiences to make daily self-care a norm, and we’re looking for someone similarly passionate to lead our design team and thrive in our fast-paced startup environment!

To help setup candidates for success, this outlines the expectations for our interview loop where there would be opportunities to meet our cofounders, designers, and cross-functional teammates.

Introductory Info Chat

After reviewing portfolios, our team will reach out to schedule an introductory info chat for candidates who would be moving forward. We’ll discuss your background, what you’re looking for in your next role, and any questions you have about the team. If it feels like there’s mutual interest, we’ll kick off the official interview loop with you!

Interview Types

Our interviews give candidates the opportunity to demonstrate how they think and work as designers. We’re building a team of senior+ designers, who push the boundaries on playfulness, visuals, and nuanced product challenges. These interviews will dive into the design skills and cultural values that are important at Finch. As we’re a remote team, all interviews will be conducted virtually over Google Meet.

Product w/ Whiteboarding

This is an interview with our cofounder Steph who oversees product and design at Finch. Candidates brainstorm and whiteboard for prompts with an emphasis on product-thinking skills. This helps both parties understand what it’s like to navigate product tradeoffs and decisions together.

Time: 1 hr

Take-Home Exercise

Candidates complete a take-home exercise where we will share a prompt to design a playful mobile product experience for a topic of the candidate’s choice. Majority of candidates have not worked on a product like Finch before and this gives folks an opportunity to showcase how they design within constraints relevant to Finch.

We recommend budgeting 5 hours for the exercise and give candidates 7 days to complete it to help with time coordination. We intentionally rely on candidates to assess what’s most important to focus their time on, as this reflects the level of independence that Finch designers need to navigate within our team. Compensation is offered as a token of appreciation.

The take-home exercise may be paired with a deep dive discussion. During the deep dive, candidates can budget 10 mins to present their design and 20 mins for discussion, with remaining time to ask questions about Finch. This is intended to be a casual conversation with a designer from our team. Depending on where the conversation leads, there there may be opportunities to riff and whiteboard off of the design.

Time: take-home, up to 45 mins deep dive
